Tokachi Hills is a facility spanning approximately 23 hectares in Makubetsu, Hokkaido, centered around the themes of 'agriculture' and 'food.' It is characterized by its beautiful hilltop gardens, seasonal events, and dining experiences that utilize the rich agricultural products of the Tokachi region. It offers a quintessential Hokkaido experience where natural landscapes and culinary culture blend seamlessly.
The facility is deeply rooted in the rich agricultural and culinary traditions of the Tok-achi region. Rather than being a simple garden, it serves as a hub to communicate the charm of the area through its produce and food. The garden is designed to allow visitors to feel the joy of growth and harvest alongside the changing seasons.
The grounds include garden areas where vegetables, fruits, and herbs are cultivated. A standout feature is the 'Umbrella Sky'—one of the largest installations of its kind in Hokkaido—which often decorates the sky during May and June, creating a colorful and photogenic landscape. Depending on the season, visitors can also enjoy cherry blossom viewing or special events centered around fresh buckwheat (soba).
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. Key highlights include cherry blossoms in May, the Rose Week and the colorful Umbrella Sky from June to July, and autumn events featuring fresh buckwheat in October. For the best experience, visit during bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the vivid colors of the plants and the stunning sky.
Visitors can enjoy dining while immersed in nature. The onsite shop cafe offers seasonal menus, such as soft-serve ice cream made with local Tokachi red beans (azuki). The shop also features a variety of local specialties, including bean-based products, handmade crafts by local artisans, and gardening goods. Since the grounds are quite extensive, you can also rent an electric cart (paid service) to travel around the perimeter comfortably.
While the Tokachi region boasts many tourist spots, Tokachi Hills is unique for its integration with the vast agricultural landscape. The surrounding scenery is a testament to the iconic, wide-open farmlands that define the Tokachi area.
While the facility is largely barrier-free, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes due to the large size of the grounds. To protect the flora, please do not step into the flower beds or damage any plants. For photography, personal use is permitted, but please avoid long-term occupation of space or photographing staff without permission. The use of drones and placing tripods inside flower beds is strictly prohibited. The entire garden is a non-smoking area; please smoke only inside your private vehicle. If visiting with pets, they must be on a leash (under 2m) and you must be responsible for cleaning up after them.
