Toin Garden is a historic garden located on the eastern side of the Heijo Palace Site. Historically known as "To-gu" or "Toin," this area is believed to have functioned as a guest house or reception hall where members of the imperial family held banquets and important ceremonies. Today, it serves as a precious space that preserves the atmosphere of ancient Japanese court culture through its meticulously maintained historical landscape.
The history of this garden is deeply intertwined with the structure of the Heijo Palace. Following the discovery of the garden's ruins in 1967, extensive research was conducted to understand its original form. Based on these archaeological findings, the garden was reconstructed in its current form in 1998. It stands as a vital historical site that allows modern visitors to glimpse the social and ceremonial-rich life of the ancient imperial court.
The center of the garden features a scenic landscape built around a central pond. The design utilizes natural topography and water flow to recreate the ancient garden style. As you walk through the area, you can observe the traditional vegetation and the layout that once hosted the imperial court, offering a serene environment to reflect on Japan's past.
Toin Garden offers a different face to visitors depending on the season. The period from October to November is particularly stunning, as the autumn foliage colors the landscape with vibrant reds and yellows. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows for the best view of the scenery reflecting in the pond and the lush greenery surrounding the site.

Nearby, you can find facilities such as the "Heijo-kyo Izanai-kan" (Information Center), which provides deeper insights into the history of the palace.
