Tsugeike Nature Park is a high-altitude wetland located at an altitude of approximately 1,900m in the Tsugeike Kogen area of Otari Village, Hakuba, Nagano Prefecture. Covering an area of about 100 hectares, this site is a protected part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park. The greatest charm of this location lies in the seasonal shifts of colorful alpine plants and the majestic panoramic view of the Hakuba Mountain Range. During periods of exceptional clarity, the landscape feels incredibly close and overwhelming in its beauty.
This wetland was formed by the volcanic activity of Mount Hakuba Norikura. Volcanic movements created stepped fault lines that formed flat surfaces, where water accumulated to nurture plants like Sphagnum moss and Eriophorum. Over many years, the accumulation of peat has built this beautiful, unique ecosystem. Historically, development and conservation efforts progressed through the 1970s. In 1994, to better protect the environment, access to the nature park was transitioned from buses to a ropeway system. Since 2007, accessibility improvements have been made to ensure more people can enjoy this natural wonder.
The park features a well-maintained 5.5km walking trail where visitors can stroll while observing various alpine plants. Depending on the season, you can enjoy lush greenery and flowers in summer or vibrant autumn colors. The Visitor Center provides fascinating exhibits regarding the local flora, fauna, and topography, allowing for a deeper understanding of the area's natural formation. From the observation wetlands, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Hakuba Daisekkei (Great Snowy Valley) and the Northern Alps.
The park offers different charms depending on when you visit. From June to August, the wetlands are adorned with summer flowers. From late August to mid-September, the air becomes exceptionally clear, making it the best time to see the Hakuba Mountain Range with perfect clarity.
