Higashi Otani Mantoka is a traditional summer evening event held at Otali Sobyo in Kyoto. The ritual originated from the practice of lighting lanterns to guide worshippers through the heat of the summer night, providing a cooler and more comfortable way to observe the Obon season. The soft, warm light of the lanterns enveloping the temple grounds creates a deeply mystical atmosphere, offering a precious opportunity to step away from daily life and reflect quietly on oneself or one's ancestors.
This historic event is currently in its 64th year. More than just a sightseeing event, it serves as a spiritual space to encounter the teachings of Shinran Shonin through the remembrance of the deceased. While the lanterns originally served the practical purpose of lighting the path for worshippers, they have evolved into a significant cultural ritual that fosters a deep connection to Buddhist teachings and ancestral respect.
The greatest attraction is the sight of the lanterns illuminating the temple grounds at night. The scenery of Otali Sobyo under the lantern light offers a completely different expression than during the daytime. During the event, Buddhist memorial services (Hoyo) are held at the main hall. Visitors can experience profound Buddhist teachings through these services and dharma talks. Additionally, there are visual displays such as 'Hanamoji' (flower calligraphy), where Buddhist teachings are expressed through the beauty of flowers.
The event is held annually from August 14th to 16th. The best time to visit is after 18:00 (6:00 PM) when the lanterns are fully lit. You can enjoy the flickering lights amidst the stillness of the night. Since temperatures in Kyoto are very high during the Obon season, visiting during the cooler evening hours is highly recommended for a more comfortable experience.
