Terasaka Rice Terraces

The Terasaka Rice Terraces are situated on the fluvial terraces along the Sozawa River, descending from Mt. Takashino in Yokoze Town, Saitama. The view is dominated by the majestic silhouette of Mount Buko, with the terraced fields covering a total area of approximately 5.2 hectares, of which about 4 hectares are actively used for rice cultivation. This site offers a profound sense of harmony between human agriculture and the natural environment.

History & Cultural Background

Human life has flourished in this region since ancient times, with archaeological sites from the Jomon period nearby. The history of these terraces is deep; records indicate that these terraced structures existed as far back as the Kamakura period. To preserve this heritage, the "Terasaka Tanada School" was established in 2001. This initiative focuses on passing down traditional rice cultivation techniques, including the cultivation of ancient rice varieties and the hosting of seasonal harvest festivals.

Main Highlights

The scenery at Terasaka changes beautifully with the seasons. From late May to early June, you can witness the rhythmic process of rice planting. By July, the fields are covered in a lush, vibrant green. In September, the area becomes a sea of crimson during the "Higanbana (Red Spider Lily) Festival," where approximately 2 million flowers bloom alongside the golden hues of ripening rice. Additionally, during summer, the landscape is illuminated by approximately 600 ceremonial bonfire lights, creating a magical atmosphere.

This program allows participants to experience the full cycle of rice farming, starting from soil preparation in April, through planting, weeding, and harvesting, leading up to the harvest festival in November. Participants can even receive the ancient rice they helped cultivate.

Surrounding Area

The area around the rice terraces is dotted with spots related to nature and agriculture. For instance, the Komatsuzawa Leisure Farm and the Uenohara Farm are within walking distance, offering opportunities to engage directly with local agricultural life. The area is also part of the scenic routes used to enjoy the broader Chichibu region.
