Teraogahara Senbonzakura Park is a celebrated cherry blossom spot located in Bugegawa-cho, Seki City, Gifu Prefecture. Approximately 1,000 cherry trees are planted along a 2km stretch of the prefectural road connecting Terao Pass (elevation 220m) to the Terao district. This iconic cherry blossom avenue serves as a symbol of spring's arrival. From early to mid-April, the road is completely enveloped in a canopy of blossoms, creating a breathtaking landscape.
The history of this avenue dates back to 1951. Following the opening of a bus route in the Terao district, local residents initiated a movement to plant cherry trees that would provide shade in summer while allowing sunlight through in winter. In March 1952, the residents of the Terao district came together to plant 300 trees as a prayer for peace. This collective effort marked the beginning of the 'Teraogahara Senbonzakura,' a landscape that has grown alongside the local community for decades.
The most striking feature is the 2km-long cherry blossom tunnel along the prefectural road. Seeing 1,000 trees in full bloom creates a massive, immersive spectacle. During the peak season, the park features night-time illuminations. The light reflecting off the blossoms offers a completely different, ethereal atmosphere compared to the bright scenery of the daytime.
The ideal time to visit is from early to mid-April when the blossoms reach full bloom and density is at its highest. You can enjoy the bright, sunny views during the day, or witness the dramatic changes during the night-time illuminations. The seasonal beauty shifts from the early budding in late March to the falling petals in mid-April.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the prefectural road surrounding the park. The layout is also perfect for a scenic drive, allowing you to experience the continuous tunnel of blossoms from your vehicle. It is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in nature.
The park is located in the Bugegawa area, approximately a 40-minute drive from Gifu City. The surrounding area is rich in natural beauty and can be easily integrated into a larger sightseeing itinerary for Gifu Prefecture and Seki City.
While the park itself is a public space, if you visit nearby facilities, please note that while credit cards are increasingly accepted, some smaller local establishments may only accept cash.
English signage and staff support in the immediate area are limited. It is highly recommended to use a translation app or offline maps for navigation.
No advanced reservations are required to visit the park. You can enter freely based on the blooming status of the trees.
Temperatures can fluctuate significantly during the spring. If you plan to stay for the night-time illuminations, we recommend bringing a warm jacket to prepare for the evening chill.
Photography is permitted; however, please be extremely careful when taking photos near the road, as vehicles are passing through the area.
As the park follows natural terrain and a prefectural road, there may be uneven surfaces, steps, or slopes. Please check the route carefully if using a wheelchair.
Since the area is a functional road with vehicle traffic, please prioritize pedestrian safety. We also ask that visitors respect the local environment and maintain the beauty of the landscape.
