The Tenson Korin Kirishima Kumemen Taiko is a special dedication ritual held every January 1st at the historic Kirishima Jingu Shrine. Performers wear sacred masks known as 'Kumemen' and perform powerful Taiko drumming and horn playing. This ritual, held to announce the beginning of the new year, symbolizes the profound connection between Japanese traditional spirituality, nature, and the divine.
The ritual expresses the descent of deities from the high heavenly realm, Takamagahara, through the resonant sounds of drums and traditional instruments. Performers are dressed in elegant white or light purple robes to recreate the appearance of the gods. This ceremony is a highly prestigious cultural event that preserves the rich history and mythological heritage of the Kirishima region.
The greatest attraction is the dynamic Taiko drumming performed by musicians wearing the sacred Kumemen masks. Admission to watch the performance is free, allowing you to experience the world of Japanese mythology through sound and movement.
