Tenno River Park is a beautiful urban park located in Tsushima City, Aichi Prefecture. The park is centered around the area known as "Maruike" (Round Pond), which marks the site where the former Tenno River once flowed. The park is particularly famous for its spectacular wisteria blossoms in the spring, attracting many visitors seeking its breathtaking beauty. Recognized as one of Japan's 100 Historical Parks, it offers a harmonious blend of nature and history, providing a healing space for all who visit.
The history of the park dates back to the development around the "Maruike" area, which formed following the abandonment of the Saya River in 1899. A proposal for the park's construction was made in 1918 (Taisho 7), and after receiving approval from Aichi Prefecture in 1920 (Taisho 9), full-scale development began. Interestingly, the park once had a zoo aspect; in 1935, monkeys were exhibited, and by 1958, animal enclosures for lions and bears were established, making it a beloved local landmark. Today, it is managed as a space to enjoy seasonal scenery while preserving its natural and historical essence.
