Tennei-ji is a historic Zen temple located in Higashidodo-cho, Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Founded in 1367, the temple grounds are home to the beautiful three-story pagoda (Kaiun-to), which is designated as an Important Cultural Property. This pagoda offers a breathtaking view where the sea and sky seem to merge into one, creating a unique landscape characteristic of Onomichi. Visitors can also encounter the 500 Arhat statues and the beloved 'Sasuri-butsu' (Hinto-ro statue), a figure associated with healing and well-being, which is deeply cherished by the local community.
The temple's origins date back to 1367, founded through the devotion of Doen of Onomichi and the patronage of Ashikaga Yoshitaka. While it was originally a Rinzai sect temple, it later transitioned to the Soto Zen sect during the Genroku era. Historical records suggest that the temple once occupied a vast area spanning the three towns of Higashi, Naka, and Minami, featuring a grand complex of seven halls. Today, it remains a significant site that preserves the rich history and architectural heritage of the Onomichi region.
The most iconic feature of Tennei-ji is the three-story pagoda, also known as 'Kaiun-to,' a designated Important Cultural Property. The view of the sea and sky behind the pagoda is considered one of the most representative landscapes of Onomichi. Another remarkable sight is the 500 Arhat statues lined up neatly within the hall, symbolizing the spiritual depth of the temple. Additionally, the Hinto-ro statue located to the left of the main hall is known as 'Sasuri-butsu.' It is believed that stroking the part of the statue corresponding to one's own ailment can aid in healing, making it a popular site for prayer and spiritual connection.
For those wishing to experience the seasonal beauty, a visit from late March to April is highly recommended. During this period, the temple grounds are adorned with weeping cherry blossoms, white magnolias, and hundreds of blooming peonies. The bright daylight hours are particularly beautiful, as the colors of the sea and sky visible through the three-story pagoda become exceptionally vivid. The changing colors of the sky and the seasonal flora offer a different charm throughout the year.
Tennei-ji hosts regular spiritual activities. Zazen (seated meditation) and sutra chanting sessions are held every Sunday from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 AM to 7:10 AM. These sessions provide a peaceful escape from daily life. Please note that if you wish to participate in these sessions, advanced reservation via telephone is required.
Tennie-ji is perfectly situated within the popular sightseeing route of Onomichi, near other famous temples like Senko-ji. From the temple gate, looking toward the grounds, you can enjoy a picturesque view where the temple buildings, the three-story pagoda, and the nearby Senko-ji temple harmonize with the natural topography. The temple is easily accessible from Onomichi Station by foot or via local bus.
