Tenkyokaku is a magnificent villa located in Inawashiro, Fukushima Prefecture, originally serving as a private residence for members of the Japanese Imperial family. It is a stunning example of Meiji-era Western-style architecture, masterfully incorporating Renaissance elements. The exterior, characterized by white paneled walls and elegant balconies, harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding natural landscape, creating a striking and prestigious presence. The history of this architecture is deeply connected to the Arisugawa-no-miya and Takamatsu-no-miya families. The name "Tenkyokaku" was inspired by a poem by the poet Li Bai, "The lake surface reflects the sky like a heavenly mirror," which was noted when the Emperor Taisho visited the area during his time as Crown Prince. This reflects the breathtaking beauty of Lake Inawashiro as seen from the villa. Today, it is designated as a National Important Cultural Property, preserved as a precious relic of Japan's modern architectural history.
The interior is adorned with numerous furnishings that tell the story of a luxurious lifestyle from a bygone era. A standout feature is the collection of 26 fireplaces, including marble mantels decorated with exquisite British Majolica tiles, showcasing high artistic value. Visitors can also admire the grand chandeliers, delicate plasterwork on the ceilings, and the intricate "mirror" motifs that give the building its name. The exterior is equally captivating, with its octagonal roofs and circular dormer windows creating a beautiful, varied silhouette.
Tenkyokaku reveals different charms with each season. The summer months, when the surrounding greenery is lush, and the autumn season, famous for its vibrant foliage, offer the most striking contrast between the architecture and nature. Please note that opening hours vary by season: from May to October, it opens at 8:30 AM, and from November to April, it opens at 9:00 AM. The bright daylight hours are the best time to visit, as the sunlight creates a beautiful contrast with the opulent interior decorations.
Visitors can immerse themselves in the luxurious atmosphere of an Imperial family's former villa. You can observe the intricate architectural details and experience the unique blend of Western influence and Japanese aesthetic sensibilities of the modern era. Outside, you can stroll through the gardens and encounter the statue of Prince Arisugawa Takehito, adding a sense of historical depth to your walk.
Tenkyokaku is situated near the shores of the beautiful Lake Inawashiro. The surrounding area is perfect for scenic drives and leisurely walks amidst nature. It is easily accessible from the Inawashiro-Bandai Kogen Interchange on the Ban-etsu Expressway, making it a perfect stop on a Fukushima sightseeing route.
As this is an Important Cultural Property, visitors are asked to act with respect and care. Due to the historical structure, there may be uneven surfaces, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. While access to the main building interior may be limited for wheelchair users, the beautiful gardens are accessible for viewing. Regarding parking, you may consult the reception regarding vehicle access to the garden area.
