Tenkaifu Observatory is a premier lookout point located in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, situated at an altitude of 165 meters. Its most defining feature is the overwhelming 180-degree panoramic view of the Kujukushima islands. Below, the beautiful sea of Kujukushima and Sasebo Port unfold, allowing visitors to feel the profound beauty of nature's formations up close. It is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Sasebo, offering a landscape that changes its expression with every season.
This area is located within the Saikai National Park, a region where the rich natural environment has been carefully preserved for centuries. The complex coastline and the scattered islands of Kujukushima hold significant value as a natural heritage of the region. The surrounding gardens and paths have been beautifully maintained to allow both locals and tourists to enjoy the seasonal floral displays in a peaceful, structured space.
The greatest draw is the panoramic vista of the Kujukushima islands. During the daytime, you can witness the sea surface shimmering brilliantly under the sunlight. In the late afternoon, the view transforms into a breathtaking sunset as the sun dips below the horizon of the Kujukushima islands. Furthermore, the seasonal flower beds provide a stunning visual feast: approximately 150,000 rapeseed flowers bloom in the spring (late March to early April), while about 150,000 cosmos flowers bloom in the autumn (mid to late October).
To experience the best of Tenkaifu, timing is key. The spring rapeseed season and the autumn cosmos season offer a harmonious blend of colorful flora and maritime scenery. The scenery also shifts dramatically depending on the time of day. While the bright, sparkling sea is beautiful during the day, visiting around sunset (for example, around 17:24 in January or 19:34 in July, though times vary by month) is highly recommended to experience the deep, colorful hues of the Kujukushima sunset. From the observatory, you can relax and soak in the tranquil view of the islands. In the past, events such as the "Rapeseed Walk" were held, offering a way to experience walking through nature. The area is perfect for photography enthusiasts and those looking for a peaceful stroll amidst beautiful scenery.
There are many other scenic spots within the Saikai National Park nearby. You can explore the Kujukushima Visitor Center, Mt. Ishi Observatory, Kujukushima Botanical Garden (Morikirara), and Tenjin Park. Visiting these nearby areas will deepen your understanding of the rich natural beauty of Sasebo and its surrounding seas.
As the observatory is an open-air outdoor area, please dress according to the season. During the spring and autumn flower seasons, it is wise to bring a hat for sun protection and wear comfortable walking shoes. While the area is accessible, transportation via car or taxi is highly recommended, as public bus services can be infrequent. If participating in local events, please note that cash may be required.
