Tendo Onsen is a renowned hot spring destination located on the northern side of Mt. Maizuru in Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture. The history of the area dates back to 1911 (Meiji 44) when a high-temperature spring was discovered in the Kamata district, and the area officially became known as "Tendo Onsen" in 1924. Today, the town offers a diverse range of accommodations, from modern hotels to traditional Japanese-style ryokans. Tendo is also famous as the center of Shogi (Japanese chess) piece production, and it is not uncommon to see prestigious Shogi title matches held at local inns. The town is well-equipped with public facilities such as foot baths (ashiyu), hand baths (tedayu), and mineral water drinking stations, allowing visitors to experience the local hot spring culture while strolling through the streets.
The history of Tendo Onsen began with the discovery of hot springs during well-drilling in 1911. Originally called "Kamata Onsen," it was renamed to "Tendo Onsen" in 1924. While there were once 19 different spring sources in the area, the implementation of centralized management in 1955 allowed for the development of larger, more modern ryokans. In 2021, to celebrate the 110th anniversary of its opening, the "No. 10 Source" and the "Onsen Yagura" (hot spring tower) were completed as local symbols. The deep connection between the hot spring culture and the local Shogi culture is a unique characteristic of this region.
The charm of Tendo Onsen lies in its relaxing strolls and diverse lodging options. Visitors can enjoy public foot baths and mineral water stations to refresh themselves while walking through the scenic town. The area is surrounded by the natural beauty of Mt. Maizuru and Mt. Evening strolls are also highly recommended to soak in the tranquil atmosphere of the town.

Using the public foot baths is a great way to experience the mineral-rich waters while exploring. Tendo Onsen serves as an important base for touring Yamagata Prefecture. It provides easy access to famous sightseeing spots such as Yamadera (Risshaku-ji Temple) and the Zao mountain range, making it an ideal place to stay while exploring the wider region.
When walking through the town, comfortable clothing is recommended, especially if using the foot baths. The spring water is a sodium-calcium sulfate spring with a temperature of 69°C. Drinking the mineral water is said to benefit those with certain conditions like diabetes or chronic constipation, though please consult local guidance.
