Tendo Park, centered around Mount Maizuru (elevation 242.1m), is located in the heart of Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture. Built upon the historic site of Tendo Castle, it is a beloved recreational space for locals and visitors alike. From the observation deck at the summit, you can enjoy majestic views of iconic landmarks such as Mt. Gasan, the Asahi Mountain Range, and the Mogami River. The park is also renowned as a premier cherry blossom destination, with approximately 2,000 trees creating a breathtaking landscape every spring.
The area holds significant historical value as the site of the former Tendo Castle. Tendo City is famously known as the 'City of Shogi' (Japanese chess), and the park hosts cultural events deeply connected to this tradition. In 2021, the 'Tendo Park Momiji Garden' was opened, and improvements were made to connect the summit with the lower water-side areas via decks and stairs, making it easier to experience the seamless blend of nature and local culture.

Tendo Park offers diverse attractions depending on the season. On clear days, the summit observation deck provides a panoramic view of Mt. Gasan, the Asahi Mountain Range, and the Mogami River. During the spring, the 2,000 cherry blossoms create a spectacular pink canopy. Throughout the year, the landscape changes with seasonal blooms including azaleas, hydrangeas, irises, red spider lilies, and autumn maple leaves. Additionally, the well-maintained waterfront area around Lake Atago offers a peaceful setting for relaxation.
The best time to visit depends on your interests. In mid-April, the cherry blossoms reach full bloom for the Tendo Sakura Festival. This is a must-see period where people dressed in traditional kimono and samurai armor perform 'Human Shogi,' a living representation of a Shogi match. In autumn, the park turns vibrant with colorful maple leaves. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to fully appreciate the vivid colors of the flora and the expansive mountain scenery.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors here. The park features walking courses lasting between 60 to 90 minutes. From April to November, the park also promotes health-oriented walking inspired by German 'climatic terrain therapy.' For those looking to relax, a BBQ area is available near the waterfront. The walking paths consist of a 250-meter route with a 52-meter elevation change, utilizing well-maintained slopes and deck stairs for easier movement.
The area surrounding Tendo Park is rich in culture and relaxation, featuring Tendo Onsen (hot spring) accommodations and various Shogi-related facilities. The city center is compact, allowing you to easily stroll through the nearby hot spring district after your walk in the park. The park is easily accessible, with the JR Ou Main Line to the west and National Route 13 to the east.

As the park features slopes and stairs, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Regarding payments, please carry cash or credit cards for nearby facilities and shops.
