The Giant Banyan Tree of Tejuku-ku is a colossal Banyan tree located in the Tejuku-ku settlement, in the central part of Kikai Island, Kagoshima Prefecture. It stands 17.7m tall, with a trunk circumference of 16m and a breathtaking canopy diameter of 42m. With an estimated age of over 100 years, it is one of the largest natural structures on the island. This site is widely recognized as the island's most significant 'power spot,' offering a unique, spiritual atmosphere that envelops all who visit.
This Banyan tree has stood as a silent guardian of the Tejuku-ku settlement for generations. As a symbolic tree of the subtropics, the Banyan has long been cherished by the local community. Its century-long history serves as a living testament to the passage of time and the enduring strength of nature. Being situated within a local settlement, the tree is deeply integrated into the history and natural heritage of the region.
The most striking feature is its overwhelming scale. When looking up from directly beneath the tree, you can observe the countless branches spreading out in a radial pattern, creating a natural, massive roof that covers the sky. Another characteristic feature is the 'aerial roots' (kikon) hanging from the thick branches. The sight of these complex, intertwined roots provides a visually stunning demonstration of the biological processes of plant life and growth.
While the Banyan tree remains lush and green year-round, visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to enjoy the beautiful 'komorebi' (sunlight filtering through the leaves). To experience the dramatic contrast between light and shadow, we recommend visiting when the sun is high in the sky. The greenery is particularly vibrant during the seasons when surrounding vegetation is at its peak, enhancing the sense of natural abundance.

The Giant Banyan Tree is nestled within the rich natural environment of Kikai Island. The area is dotted with beautiful beaches, making it a popular stop during island tours via car or rental car. It is conveniently located approximately 15 minutes by car from Kikai Airport, making it an easy addition to your island itinerary.
While there is no entrance fee to visit this public natural site, we recommend carrying cash or credit cards for any nearby transportation or food-related expenses.

Due to the natural terrain, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes (such as sneakers). It is also wise to bring a hat for sun protection and bottled water to stay hydrated.
Photography is permitted and encouraged; however, please follow local etiquette and ensure you do not damage the tree or the surrounding vegetation.
