Tatsuzawa Fudo Falls is a stunning waterfall located on the Fudogawa River, which originates from Mount Funame in the Adatara mountain range in Inawashiro, Fukushima Prefecture. It is highly regarded as one of the "Inawashiro New Eight Views" and is also selected as one of the "30 Best Waterfalls of Fukushima." The most captivating feature is the coexistence of two distinct personalities: the powerful "Odaki" (Male Falls), which is 10m high and 16m wide, and the elegant "Medaki" (Female Falls) located to its west. The way the water cascades down the rock face like a bamboo blind (sudare) showcases both the raw power and the delicate artistry of nature.
At the base of the falls, Fudo Myoo (Acala) has been enshrined since ancient times. This site has long been a place where the raw power of nature meets spiritual tranquility, cherished by local communities as a site of religious devotion. The surrounding area is a lush, primary forest that maintains an atmosphere of deep respect for the natural world.
The greatest highlight is the visual contrast between Odaki and Medaki. While Odaki displays a heroic and grand presence, spreading wide across the rock face, Medaki offers a quiet, serene, and modest beauty. Additionally, because Odaki faces south, visitors may witness the magical phenomenon of a rainbow appearing in the mist during certain times of the day and under specific weather conditions. Seeing this rainbow is a rare and precious moment for any traveler.
The falls offer a different face in every season. From spring to summer, the vibrant green foliage creates a striking contrast with the white rushing water. In autumn, the surrounding trees turn into a tapestry of brilliant colors, enhancing the scenic beauty of the falls. For the best experience, visiting on a bright, sunny day during midday is highly recommended, as this increases the chances of seeing a rainbow created by the water spray.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll while observing the natural landscape. Near the falls, you can experience a space where nature and spirituality are one, thanks to the enshrined Fudo deity. The paths are well-maintained, allowing you to feel the power of the waterfall up close. The site is also relatively close to the Nakonosawa Onsen area, making it easy to combine a visit to the falls with a relaxing hot spring trip.
The area is surrounded by rich, untouched nature. After visiting the falls, you can relax at the nearby Nakonosawa Onsen. The Inawashiro area also boasts many other attractions, such as Mount Bandai, making this a perfect base for a nature-themed journey through Fukushima. The walk from the parking lot to the falls takes approximately 10 minutes through a scenic forest path.
As this is a natural site, the terrain may be damp or uneven. We highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes with good grip. Since you may get splashed by water spray, wearing clothes that can easily get wet or bringing a light waterproof layer is advisable, especially on windy or rainy days.
