Toryu Falls is a magnificent waterfall located in Nishiide, Oizumi Town, Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, within the Kawamata River Valley. Situated at an altitude of 1,250 meters, the waterfall is fed by groundwater from the southeastern foothills of the Yatsugatake Mountains, which emerges from volcanic rock layers. The name "Toryu" (Dragon Spouting) comes from the sight of numerous fine water streams emerging from the rocks, resembling a dragon breathing out water. The water remains pure throughout the year with a constant flow. The delicate landscape of many thin streams weaving through the rocks creates a striking contrast with the surrounding mossy stones and clear river, offering a deeply tranquil experience.
The waterfall was shaped by the natural flow of the Kawamata River. Its name is deeply tied to the visual metaphor of a dragon breathing out water through the rock crevices. Since the late 20th century, it has been celebrated as a representative natural landmark of the Kiyosato region. Notably, the site gained wider recognition after being featured in the opening scenes of the 2002 NHK Taiga Drama "Toshiie to Matsu: Kaga Hyakumangoku Monogatari." Today, the area is well-maintained with efforts focused on nature conservation and the development of walking paths, allowing visitors to connect with nature while preserving the pristine environment.
The most captivating feature is the delicate pattern of numerous thin streams cascading down the rock face. Near the base of the falls, the contrast between the moss-covered rocks and the clear flowing water is particularly striking. The well-maintained walking paths run along the valley, allowing you to view the waterfall from various angles—either directly in front of it or from slightly elevated positions. Surrounded by the lush forests of the southern Yatsugatake foothills, visitors can immerse themselves in the natural sounds of birdsong and the soothing rhythm of falling water.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. The period around May offers vibrant fresh greenery, while the season from late October to mid-November provides breathtaking autumn colors. During autumn, the colorful foliage creates a stunning backdrop for the waterfall. In the summer, the dense shade of the surrounding trees provides a refreshing escape from the heat, making it an ideal spot for cooling off. In winter, the landscape may change due to ice and snow. For the best photography, visiting during bright daylight hours is highly recommended.
The surrounding area features several scenic spots, such as "Senmaibuchi," and is perfect for exploring via the Kawamata Higashizawa Natural Trail. Accessing the falls is easy, with a short hike of about 10 to 20 minutes from the parking area. This well-maintained path is suitable for families and beginners. It is an ideal place for nature photography or a quiet, meditative stroll while listening to the sounds of the river.
Toryu Falls is part of the Kiyosato Plateau area, characterized by the natural beauty of the southern Yatsugatake mountains. You can access the area via nearby stations such as Kiyosato Station or Kai-Oizumi Station. From there, you can explore other scenic spots along the Kawamata River Valley through various natural trails.
As you will be walking on natural-terrain paths, please wear sturdy, non-slip shoes. Be cautious of slippery surfaces during or after rain. While the area is free to visit, please check the status of local facilities for any specific rules. Most signage is in Japanese, so it is helpful to have information ready in advance. No reservations are required. Please respect the environment by not picking plants and ensuring all trash is carried away.
