The Tachi Neputa Museum is a cultural facility located in Goshogawara City, Aomori Prefecture. Its primary purpose is the permanent exhibition and preservation of the Tachi Neputa—massive, vertical floats used in local festivals—as well as various art exhibitions. Here, visitors can witness the overwhelming scale and exquisite craftsmanship of these giant floats from a close-up perspective, offering a profound connection to local traditions.
Since the revival of the Tachi Neputa tradition in Goshogawara, the city has focused on regional revitalization through this spectacular event. This facility was built as a central hub for the production and storage of these massive floats. During the festival season, the large-scale floats displayed here are prepared to move out into the streets, playing a vital role in supporting the community's heritage and local identity.
The greatest attraction is the Tachi Neputa Exhibition Room, which houses massive vertical floats. Because a new Tachi Neputa is manufactured every year, the museum always displays three massive floats (the current year's model, the previous year's, and the one from two years ago). Having the opportunity to view such enormous structures and their intricately detailed, colorful designs up close is a truly rare and precious experience. Additionally, the second floor features an art gallery showcasing works by artists with deep ties to the local region.
While the museum is open year-round, visiting during the summer festival season (July and August) allows you to feel the intense energy and heat of the festival more directly. Please note that operating hours may vary by season. For example, from October to March, the closing time is moved earlier to 17:00. We highly recommend checking the official website for the most up-to-date information before your visit.
Beyond just viewing the displays, visitors can learn about the cultural background of the region. The exhibition room is designed so that you can visually understand the technical skill and structural ingenuity required to build and store these massive floats. The layout allows visitors to descend from the upper levels along a designated path, providing a dynamic and multi-dimensional view of the artworks.
