Tashirojima, located southeast of Ishinomaki City in Miyagi Prefecture, is a remote island part of the Sanriku Fukko National Park. It is internationally recognized as the 'Cat Island' due to the large population of cats living alongside the residents. At the heart of the island lies Neko Jinja (Cat Shrine), where cats are revered as the guardians of the fishing industry, fostering a unique culture of coexistence between humans and felines. Additionally, the island promotes local revitalization through manga-themed initiatives, such as the 'Manga Island' accommodation facilities.
The history of Tashirojima is profound. The Nitoda district contains shell mounds that serve as evidence of Jomon period activity and are designated as historical sites of Miyagi Prefecture. During the Edo period, the area was famous for its 'Daibo-ami' fishing method using large fixed nets. This history of fishing helped nurture a culture of treating cats with great care—cats that gathered at fishermen's huts—leading to the establishment of the current Neko Jinja. The island also holds a historical background as a former place of exile for the Sendai Clan.
A key cultural landmark is Neko Jinja (Miyori Daimyojin), a shrine dedicated to the spirits of cats, which is essential to the island's legends. Another unique experience is staying at 'Manga Island,' an accommodation facility designed with input from manga artists, blending manga culture with island life. Tashirojima enjoys a mild climate throughout the year, but visiting during the summer months (May to August) is particularly pleasant when the seaside scenery is vibrant and island activities are most active. Daytime is the best time for observing cats and strolling through the island's scenic paths.

Tashirojima is located to the west of the Oshika Peninsula in Ishinomaki. It is connected to nearby islands like Ajishima via island ferry routes. To reach the island, you will need to take a ferry from central Ishinomaki.
