The area is steeped in the "Nanatsugama Legend." It tells the story of a man who broke a promise to the deity Benten-sama—promising to catch fish with only one net—and subsequently lost his life due to the wrath of the great serpent that dwells in the waterfall pools. This legend symbolizes the deep respect and awe for nature held by the local people. Furthermore, this beautiful landscape has long captivated visitors, having been featured in the works of the Edo-period scholar Suzuki Makoshi, such as "Hokuetsu Setsuho" and "Akuyama Kiko," complete with illustrations.
