Tarumae Goro is a gorge located at the foot of Mount Tarumae in Tomakomai, Hokkaido. It is officially designated as a nature conservation area. The most striking feature is the unique landscape created by the steep rock walls draped in thick, deep green moss. The moss covering the cliffs is so beautiful it is often described as a "velvet carpet," showcasing the magnificent sculptural beauty of nature.

History & Cultural Background

To protect its precious natural environment, this area was designated as a municipal nature conservation district in 1979. For many years, the rich ecosystem and breathtaking scenery have been carefully preserved, maintaining a place where the strength and delicacy of nature coexist. The surrounding forests also serve as a habitat for various wild animals, offering a profound sense of the boundary between civilization and the wild.

Main Highlights

The most spectacular view is looking down into the gorge from the bridge. The contrast between the sheer rock faces and the sunlight filtering down to the deep riverbed creates a breathtaking visual experience. June, the season of fresh greenery, is particularly special; the early summer sun reaches the bottom of the gorge, making the water surface and the moss-covered rocks glow brilliantly. This is considered the most beautiful moment of the year.

Recommended Seasons & Times

The best time to visit is from May to August, when the fresh greenery is most vibrant. June is highly recommended as the changing angle of light enhances the beauty of the landscape. Regarding the time of day, it is strongly advised to avoid entering the forest during early morning or evening, as these are peak activity times for brown bears (higuma). Visiting during the bright daylight hours ensures both a clearer view and a safer experience.

Experiences & Activities

The primary way to enjoy the area is through the scenic view from the bridge and walking along the observation paths. Please note that while visitors were previously able to descend into the river, this is now strictly prohibited to prevent accidents caused by potential rockfalls. From the bridge, you can enjoy a peaceful moment observing the 6-meter-high cliffs, the mossy rock walls, and the crystal-clear stream below.

The surrounding area features several other spots for enjoying beautiful natural landscapes. As a part of Tomakomai's tourism, there are various routes to explore the nearby forests and conservation areas.

As this is a rugged natural area, visiting with comfortable walking shoes and practical clothing is highly recommended. Since this is a brown bear habitat, constant awareness of your surroundings is essential.
