Lake Tanzawa is an artificial lake created by the Miho Dam, located in Yamakita Town, Ashigarakami District, Kanagawa Prefecture. Completed in 1978, it serves as a vital water source for the Kanagawa region. Surrounded by the Tanzawa-Oyama Quasi-National Park, the lake is recognized in the '50 Scenic Views of Kanagawa' and '100 Best Dam Lakes,' offering a landscape that harmonizes beautifully with nature. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of Mt. Fuji from the lakeside, with the scenery changing dramatically through the seasons, such as cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn leaves in fall.
The creation of Lake Tanzawa was part of the development of the Shiokawa river system. The construction of the Miho Dam led to the submersion of the former Miho Village settlements and the Ozaki ruins, which date back to the mid-Jomon period. To preserve this history, the 'Tanzawa Lake Memorial Museum' and 'Miho no Ie' (a preserved traditional house from the late Edo period) were established. Local folklore, such as the 'Miho no Hyakuben Nenbutsu,' also remains a cherished part of the cultural memory of the submerged community. Thus, the lake is not just a place for recreation, but a symbol of the region's history and culture.
