Tanuki Observatory is a scenic viewpoint located on a high ground overlooking Lake Tanuki on the western side of the Asagiri Plateau in Shizuoka Prefecture. Because it sits at a higher elevation than the lakeshore, it provides a grand, unobstructed view of the entire Mount Fuji silhouette. It is particularly famous as a premier observation point for 'Sakasa Fuji' (the upside-down Fuji reflected on the water on calm days) and the 'Diamond Fuji,' where the sun appears to rest perfectly on the mountain peak. The area is equipped with benches and a viewing deck, allowing visitors to enjoy the serene landscape in a peaceful environment.

For the best photography, early morning is highly recommended. Visiting around sunrise allows you to capture the shifting light and the changing texture of the lake. When planning to see the Diamond Fuji (for example, in late April or late August), it is crucial to check the sunrise time and direction in advance. Since the clarity of the air and light contrast changes with the seasons, the mountain offers a different 'personality' depending on when you visit.
The area around the observatory is a popular field for nature walks and photography. From the parking lot on the north side, you can reach the viewpoint via a well-maintained walking path in about 5 minutes. Around Lake Tanuki, visitors can also enjoy activities such as boating, cycling, or camping. If you are focused on photography, it is common to bring equipment like tripods to record the subtle changes in the landscape within this quiet environment.
There are many spots near the observatory to enjoy nature. At the shores of Lake Tanuki, you can engage in activities like boating or fishing. Nearby, natural landmarks such as Shiraito Falls and the Odanuki Wetlands offer additional ways to experience the foot of Mount Fuji. Combining a visit here with a car allows you to explore the diverse natural landscapes of the Fuji foothills, including local campsites and bungalows.
Access to the observatory is via a walking path from the north parking lot. While the path is maintained, there are some steps and slopes, so comfortable walking shoes (like sneakers) are recommended. If visiting before dawn or in the early morning, please bring warm clothing and a light source, as temperatures can drop significantly. During rainy or snowy seasons, the ground may be slippery, so waterproof footwear is advised.
