Tankakyo (located in the Hidezaka district of Iizuna Town, Nagano Prefecture) is a breathtaking natural scenic spot. This area is renowned for its long history of fruit cultivation, particularly peaches and apples. The most striking feature is the sea of pale pink peach blossoms that stretches across the landscape, set against the majestic backdrop of the lingering snow on the Hokushin Five Peaks. As spring arrives, the vibrant colors of the blossoms create a mesmerizing spectacle that allows visitors to feel the profound transition of the seasons.
The name 'Tankakyo' originates from the expression used by the Western-style painter Saburosuke Okada in 1929. He described the landscape, where peach blossoms were in full bloom, as looking 'as if a reddish haze (Tan) were drifting through the air.' The history of fruit cultivation here dates back to the Meiji era, forming a vital part of the local culture. Although the area of cultivation is gradually decreasing, the historical and aesthetic value of this landscape remains a significant symbol of the region.
The stars of Tankakyo are the peach blossoms that bloom in spring. Approximately 900 peach trees cover an area of about 10 hectares, creating an incredibly impressive color palette. The contrast between the white snow of the Hokushin Five Peaks and the soft pink of the peach blossoms is a view unique to this location. Beyond peaches, you can also enjoy the changing expressions of nature through cherry blossoms and apple blossoms throughout the seasons.
The most recommended time to visit is from late April to early May. During this window, the peach blossoms reach their peak, offering the most vivid and beautiful scenery. It is best to visit during the bright daylight hours of spring to see the colors at their most brilliant. Following the seasonal changes from cherry blossoms to peach and apple blossoms is another wonderful way to enjoy this area.
Visitors primarily come to Tankakyo for landscape appreciation. You can enjoy a peaceful stroll around the outskirts of the orchards to admire the seasonal flowers. Please note that when enjoying the view, it is essential to follow the rules of the local farms. This is a quiet, contemplative spot where you can visually experience the passage of time through nature.
Iizuna Town offers various other attractions. For instance, near Lake Reisen, you can enjoy wakasagi (smelt) fishing and Nordic walking, and there are well-maintained campsites nearby. Additionally, the nearby Suncreール Winery and the Mure Onsen 'Tengu no Yakata' allow you to combine your visit with local food and relaxation.
As this is a natural scenic area, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Since temperatures can fluctuate in early spring, please bring clothing that allows for easy layering.
