The Yase Suspension Bridge, located in Totsukawa Village, Nara Prefecture, is one of Japan's largest suspension bridges used for daily life, boasting a height of 54m and a length of 297.7m. This dynamic structure spans a deep valley, offering a view of the pristine Totsukawa River far below. Surrounded by lush mountains, the bridge creates a unique landscape where the beauty of nature meets the thrill of man-made engineering. For visitors, it offers an incredibly exhilarating experience, feeling as though you are walking through the sky.
Completed in 1954, this bridge has a deep history. Before its construction, residents had to descend into the valley, cross a wooden bridge, and climb back up the opposite slope to reach their destination. To solve the difficulty of wooden bridges being swept away by frequent floods, local residents pooled their funds and worked with the village to complete this permanent structure. It even served as a school route for local children. Today, it is recognized as a significant piece of civil engineering heritage due to its historical value and role in the community.
The greatest attraction is the overwhelming sense of openness and the thrill of the height. The center of the bridge features boards approximately 80cm wide, which sway significantly when the wind blows, providing an intense experience. From the bridge, you can gaze down at the emerald green waters of the Totsukawa River and the steep mountains on either side. It has also become a popular 'Instagrammable' spot for those seeking breathtaking natural photography.
While accessible year-round, the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring, the mountains are wrapped in vibrant greenery, and in early summer, the landscape offers a refreshing coolness. Summer is an excellent time to combine a visit with river activities or camping. In autumn, the surrounding mountains turn brilliant colors, creating a stunning contrast with the bridge structure. In winter, you may witness a mystical landscape covered in snow. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to clearly see the river's color and the surrounding greenery.
This is more than just a sightseeing spot; it is a physical experience. Walking across the bridge allows you to feel the wind and the sensation of height. The surrounding area features campsites and riverbanks, making it a great place to relax in nature. Please note that for safety reasons, crossing via bicycle or motorcycle is strictly prohibited; only pedestrians are allowed.
Near the bridge, you will find parking lots and small souvenir shops. Below the bridge, there are campsites where you can enjoy an outdoor stay or camping while fully immersing yourself in the natural environment. The area maintains the beautiful natural environment of Totsukawa Village, making it an ideal base for driving or hiking.
Cash is required for parking fees. Credit cards and IC cards may not be accepted, so we recommend preparing cash.
English support at nearby facilities and among staff is expected to be limited.
No prior reservation is required; you can visit freely at any time.
Due to the swaying motion of the bridge, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes (such as sneakers). Also, dress appropriately for the weather as the area is susceptible to wind.
Photography is permitted, but please be mindful of other pedestrians to avoid obstructing the way.
Because of the uneven surface and the swaying of the bridge, it is difficult to navigate via wheelchair or for those with limited mobility.
For safety, please follow the rules regarding the number of people on the bridge. Do not allow more than 20 people to be on the bridge at once to prevent dangerous instability.
