The Tanigawa-dake Ropeway is a scenic cable car located in Minakami, Gunma Prefecture, connecting Doiguchi Station to Tenjindaira Station at an altitude of approximately 1,300 meters. The 15-minute ascent offers a spectacular aerial view, allowing visitors to feel the grandeur of the mountains and the delicate beauty of alpine plants up close. It serves as a vital gateway not only for serious hikers and mountaineers but also for tourists seeking a relaxing leisure experience through the use of mountain lifts.
This historic ropeway began operations on December 12, 1960. In a recent rebranding on December 1, 2024, the name was changed to "Tanigawa-dake Joch." The term "Joch" is derived from the German word for a "col" or "saddle," referring to the unique saddle-shaped topography of the Tenjindaira area. For decades, it has been an essential piece of infrastructure supporting the local mountain culture, hiking, and leisure activities.
From the ropeway, you can enjoy sweeping views of the Tanigawa mountain range, the lush forests below, and the winding rivers. Once you arrive at Tenjindaira Station, you can take the Tenjin Pass Sightseeing Lift to experience a full 360-degree panoramic view. The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons: vibrant alpine flowers in spring and summer, brilliant autumn colors in fall, and a serene, white snowy landscape in winter.
Recommended activities vary by season. From spring to summer, it is ideal for observing alpine flora and enjoying the refreshing mountain air. Autumn (around October) is a peak season for breathtaking foliage. In winter (December to March), the ropeway serves as an essential access route for skiers and snowboarders. For a quick trip, the round-trip ropeway takes about 30 minutes, while a full experience including the lift and walking trails typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours.
Combining the ropeway with the sightseeing lift offers a complete aerial experience. At Tenjindaira, visitors can enjoy local delicacies at the observation restaurant, such as the famous "Tanigawa-dake Pan Gratin," a unique dish with a European twist. The area also functions as a base for mountaineering, offering starting points for various trekking routes suitable for different skill levels.
Near the starting point, Doiguchi Station, the "Tanigawa-dake Base Plaza" provides parking and rest facilities. The nearby "Tanigawa-dake Information Center" features exhibits regarding the local geology, flora, and fauna. Additionally, the surrounding region is well-equipped with hot spring (onsen) facilities and accommodation, making it an ideal place to relax after a day of exploring nature.
Because the altitude is high, temperatures are significantly lower than at sea level. Please prepare seasonal clothing and comfortable walking shoes for hiking. While credit cards and cash are generally accepted for ticket purchases, we recommend checking specific facility-related requirements in advance.
