The name "Tanga" is said to originate from a term referring to a place where traveling monks would stay. Historically, the area served as the southern gateway to the castle town, with a bridge connecting the residences of Kokura Castle to the temples of Sogen-ji and Kaizen-ji.
The market is filled with diverse shops dealing in local ingredients. It is particularly famous for its abundant fresh seafood. Visitors can also encounter unique local specialties such as "Jinda-ni" (a traditional simmered dish) and even shops that specialize in whale meat.
