Tanezo Village is a historic settlement nestled deep within the mountains of Hida, Gifu Prefecture. The most striking feature of this village is the high ratio of storehouses to residences. Currently, the village consists of 13 households, yet it is home to 20 'Itakura' (wooden storehouses) and one earthen storehouse. These structures were historically built away from the main residences to protect food, seeds, and precious belongings from fire, creating a unique and beautiful architectural landscape.
The name 'Tanezo' has a profound meaning. It is said that ancestors who migrated from Oshu originally called this place 'Tanakura.' Later, the name evolved to 'Tanezo' (meaning 'Seed Storehouse') because the seeds stored in these wooden structures were shared with neighboring regions during times of natural disasters or famine. This legacy of mutual aid and the cycle of nature remains a core part of the village's identity.
