The Isson Tanaka Memorial Museum showcases the collection of Japanese painter Isson Tanaka, a master who used a unique color palette to depict the subtropical beauty of Amami Oshima. The building itself is designed to harmonize with the natural surroundings of Amami, utilizing local materials throughout the exhibition rooms to create a sense of place. Visitors can trace the evolution of Tanaka's artistic career—from his early years in Tokyo and Chiba to his final years in Amami—through a curated selection of approximately 80 works. It is a space where nature and art merge to create a profound sense of serenity and high quality.
Isson Tanaka (1908–1977) led a life filled with dramatic shifts. Born in Tochigi Prefecture, he attended the Tokyo School of Fine Arts before moving through various stages of life in Tokyo and Chiba. At the age of 50, he moved to Amami Oshima, where he worked as a dyer in a silk cloth factory while continuing to paint the unique birds, plants, and landscapes of the subtropics. The distinctive worldview he built is a precious legacy in modern Japanese art. The memorial museum was opened in 2001 to honor his significant contributions to the art world.
The greatest draw is the permanent collection of Isson Tanaka's masterpieces. The exhibition content is rotated approximately four times a year, organized to reflect different eras of his life: his time in Tokyo, his time in Chiba, and his final period in Amami. The works, which feature exquisitely detailed brushwork of colorful birds and tropical flora, are truly breathtaking. Additionally, the special exhibition rooms often host events focused on the culture and natural heritage of Amami.
The museum offers different expressions depending on the season. Because many of the works are themed around the nature of Amami, visiting during a season that mirrors the themes in the paintings can deepen your appreciation. During the summer months (July–August), the museum extends its hours until 19:00, allowing you to enjoy the art in a calm, twilight atmosphere. During the day, the glass-walled lounge and cafe area provide a wonderful space to enjoy the lush, green scenery surrounding the museum.

Through the exhibits, you can understand how he confronted the nature of Amami to establish his unique style. As the museum is a quiet, contemplative space, modest and comfortable clothing is recommended. To protect the artworks, please store hats and large bags in the designated areas. Regarding photography, restrictions may apply depending on the specific exhibition or area; please check local signage or staff instructions. Payments can be made via cash, credit cards, or transportation IC cards. Residents of Kagoshima Prefecture aged 70 and older may be eligible for free admission upon presentation of valid identification.
