The Tamayu-gawa River Embankment is a scenic destination located along the banks of the Tamayu River, which flows through the famous Tamadzu Onsen town in Shimane Prefecture. For approximately 2km along both sides of the river, beautiful Somei Yoshino cherry trees are planted, creating a spectacular tunnel of pink blossoms every spring. The combination of the flowing river and the soft pink scenery is a unique and iconic sight characteristic of this region.
Tamadzu Onsen is a historic hot spring area that has long been cherished for its natural beauty and healing waters. The cherry blossoms blooming along the Tamayu-gawa riverbank are an essential part of the local seasonal tradition, adding a layer of elegance to the hot spring town's landscape. This area represents a perfect fusion of traditional Japanese hot spring culture and the seasonal beauty of nature, making it a beloved destination for locals and travelers alike.

The most significant feature is the continuous line of Somei Yoshino cherry trees stretching for about 2km on both sides of the river. During the peak of spring, the sight of blossoms dancing above the flowing water is truly unforgettable. Additionally, the area often features night-time illuminations, allowing visitors to experience a completely different, more mystical atmosphere of 'Yozakura' (night cherry blossoms). The harmony between the traditional buildings of the hot spring town and the blooming trees creates a picturesque scene found nowhere else.
The most highly recommended time to visit is during the cherry blossom season in April. To witness the full splendor of the Somei Yoshino trees, aim for the peak bloom period. For the best experience, we suggest visiting during the daytime for a peaceful stroll, but do not miss the evening hours when the light-ups occur. The illuminated blossoms against the dark sky offer a magical and romantic atmosphere.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the riverbanks, taking in the scenic views of the water and the blossoms. Since the embankment is located right within the Tamadzu Onsen area, you can easily combine your walk with visits to local shops or relaxing in a nearby hot spring facility. It is an ideal place for photography and peaceful contemplation.
The Tamayu-gawa Embankment is situated right in the heart of the Tamadzu Onsen town, one of Shimane's most famous hot spring districts. Consequently, the area is surrounded by numerous high-quality accommodations, traditional restaurants, and hot spring facilities. We recommend exploring the local culinary scene and enjoying a soak in an onsen after your walk along the river.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as you will be strolling along the riverbank paths. Please be mindful of your footing on the embankments. When visiting local shops or hot spring facilities, please follow local customs and etiquette. As this is a public scenic area within a residential hot spring town, please maintain a respectful volume and enjoy the scenery quietly.
