Tama Lake (Murayama Reservoir) is an earth-fill reservoir constructed using the Sayama Hills, spanning the border between Higashimurayama in Tokyo and Tokorozawa in Saitama. It consists of two main parts: the Murayama Reservoir and the Yamaguchi Reservoir (Sayama Lake), playing a vital role in the water supply for the Tokyo metropolitan area. The area is a scenic spot where visitors can enjoy expansive views of the Okutama mountain range. Furthermore, it is recognized for its historical and engineering value, having been selected as one of the 'Modern Waterworks in Japan' and a 'Civil Engineering Heritage' by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers.
The development of this area was part of the modernization efforts during the Taisho and Showa eras to secure water supplies for growing urban centers. The Murayama Reservoir is divided into the Murayama-kami (upper) and Murayma-shimo (lower) reservoirs. The First Water Intake Tower at the Murayama-shimo reservoir is particularly notable for its heavy, dignified design, featuring a dome roof and arched windows. This structure is officially designated as a 'Tokyo Metropolitan Historical Building.'
