Tamagawa Onsen, located in Tamagawa, Tazawako, Sembokusi, Akita Prefecture, is a unique hot spring facility known for its extraordinary water composition. Its most striking feature is the highly acidic spring water, which is rare worldwide and contains components related to the low-radiation hormesis effect, a topic of interest in medical circles. Visitors can witness the powerful spectacle of white steam and boiling water erupting from the source, allowing one to feel the raw energy of nature up close. Beyond simple sightseeing, this is a place where the traditional Japanese culture of "Toji" (long-term medicinal hot spring stays) remains deeply rooted. It is a professional wellness resort where people gather for long-term stays to maintain or improve their health.
The history of this area is as intense as its waters. At one time, the highly acidic water was feared as "Tamagawa Poison Water" because it could damage surrounding farmland and aquatic life. Throughout the Edo, Meiji, and Taisho eras, much effort was spent on managing the water's impact. In the 1930s, plans were initiated to balance water quality with agricultural needs, and with the completion of a neutralization facility in 1989, the environment is now safely managed. Today, after navigating these historical challenges, Tamagawa Onsen has evolved into a world-class destination for health promotion and wellness.

There are several must-see features at Tamagawa Onsen. First is the "Dai-fun" (Great Eruption), where the spring water erupts with immense force. Second is the "Indoor Stone Bath," which uses granite infused with 20 years' worth of spring components, offering a precious experience regardless of the weather. The large public baths feature 11 different types of tubs, allowing you to choose the best soak for your physical condition. Additionally, the footbath area offers a relaxing time filled with negative ions and trace amounts of radium. Every facility is designed to maximize the therapeutic benefits of the hot spring.
While the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, the period from late April to late November is particularly pleasant for enjoying the natural surroundings and footbaths. The large public baths are open from 3:00 AM to midnight, making it perfect for those who enjoy a quiet, early morning soak. The indoor stone bath is available from 7:00 AM to 8:50 PM, and the footbath is available from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM between April 16 and November 15. Please check the official website for seasonal changes, as some facilities may have different operating hours in winter.

Here, you can experience more than just a bath; you can experience "Toji." For those staying for medicinal purposes, the "Toji Consultation Room" provides guidance even for beginners, ensuring a safe and effective healing experience. For long-term guests, the facility is highly functional, offering a communal kitchen for cooking and a laundry area with washers and dryers. This allows for a deep, authentic immersion into the Japanese culture of natural healing and mountain life.
Tamagawa Onsen is located near Lake Tazawa, one of Japan's most beautiful and transparent lakes. The surrounding mountainous area is perfect for driving and nature walks. Nearby, you can also find "Shin-Tamagawa Onsen," which can be used depending on your seasonal needs. Combining a visit to Tamagawa Onsen with sightseeing around the Lake Tazawa area will make for a truly fulfilling and rejuvenating trip to Akita Prefecture.
Please bring towels and a change of clothes. Rental Samue (traditional clothing) is available at the shop. While some facilities are open to day-trippers, certain areas like the Toji Consultation Room or the Indoor Stone Bath may require prior reservation or be restricted to overnight guests. Because the water is highly acidic, it is recommended to follow proper bathing etiquette and monitor your skin's reaction to ensure a safe and pleasant experience.
