The Tamagawa Onsen Nature Research Path is a stunning scenic area located within the Towada-Hachimantai National Park. A well-maintained path paved with stones leads from the Tamagawa Onsen lodging area to the Jigoku-dani (Hell Valley) area. This region is famous for the intense heat of Tamagawa Onsen, which boasts the highest hot spring discharge volume in Japan. As you walk, you will witness the 'Obuki' (Great Eruption), where boiling water at 98°C shoots into the air, and see steam rising from various points across the landscape.
This area is renowned as a place where the earth's energy is highly concentrated. A unique part of the local culture is the practice of 'natural rock bath' (ganban-yoku). It is common to see visitors spreading traditional straw mats (goza) on the ground to warm their bodies using the natural heat from the earth. This area has a deep-rooted connection to unique health practices and hot spring culture that utilize the earth's natural thermal energy.

The path offers a visual spectacle of raw, geothermal energy. The most iconic sight is the 'Obuki,' where hot water erupts with great force, creating a dynamic and powerful landscape. Additionally, the constant rising of steam from the cracks in the ground provides a direct view of the earth's active geological processes. Walking along the maintained path allows you to experience the more dynamic and intense side of Japan's hot spring regions.
You can feel the natural heat of the earth throughout the year. The path is surrounded by primeval forests, which offer different beautiful expressions depending on the season. While the walking path is accessible 24 hours a day, the scenery and atmosphere can change significantly due to weather conditions or volcanic gas levels. It is highly recommended to check local conditions before your visit.
A famous activity in this area is experiencing the 'natural rock bath.' Many visitors spend time sitting on specialized mats to feel the warmth of the ground. A complete circuit of the path takes approximately 30 minutes, providing a perfect opportunity to observe the steam vents and geysers while feeling the immense energy of nature.
Around Tamagawa Onsen, you will find various accommodations and areas perfect for nature walks. The area is also relatively close to other famous sightseeing spots like Lake Tazawa and Kakunodate, making it an excellent addition to a larger itinerary exploring the natural beauty of Akita Prefecture.
The path consists of stone-paved walkways, so sturdy, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please be mindful of volcanic gases and changes in water levels. For more specific safety information, please refer to the 'inboundTips' section.
