Tamabara Wetlands is a breathtaking natural sanctuary located at the foot of Mount Takatori in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture. Known as 'Ko-Oze' due to its unique vegetation, it offers a landscape so beautiful it evokes the atmosphere of the famous Oze National Park. Surrounded by a lush Japanese-style beech forest, this area provides a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Thanks to the well-maintained walking paths, visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll even within a relatively short timeframe.
The region has long been dedicated to preserving the rich ecosystem at the base of Mount Takatori. The unique environment, characterized by its Japanese-style beech forests, serves as a significant piece of local natural heritage. The wetland's vegetation is quite rare, and its timeless beauty has earned it the affectionate nickname 'Ko-Oze.' It stands as a symbol of the Japanese landscape where humans and nature exist in harmony.
The greatest charm of the wetlands is the changing face of the flora throughout the seasons. In spring, delicate wildflowers such as the Asian skunk cabbage (Mizubasho) bloom beautifully, while summer brings a vibrant, deep green landscape. As you venture further, you will reach the 'Buna-daira' area, where massive, ancient beech trees stand tall, creating a landscape of overwhelming vitality. The paths are relatively flat and well-maintained, allowing you to experience the sculptural beauty of nature up close.
The scenery transforms dramatically with each season. From spring to early summer, the water-side plants like the Asian skunk cabbage are a highlight. From early summer through summer, the bright green beech forests and wildflowers are spectacular. In autumn, the area is draped in colorful foliage, and in winter, you can witness a serene snowy landscape often associated with snowshoeing activities. For the most vivid colors, visit during daylight hours. Most visitors coordinate their visits with the Center House operating hours (typically 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM).
Nature walking is the primary way to experience this area. By walking the established trails, you can observe the unique wetland ecosystem firsthand. The surrounding Numata area also offers more active adventures depending on the season, such as paragliding, rafting, skiing, and snowshoeing. While the wetlands themselves are a place for quiet contemplation and gentle hiking, they serve as a perfect gateway to the wider outdoor adventures of Gunma.
There are many spots near the wetlands to fully enjoy the outdoors. You can explore mountain climbing routes up Mount Takatori or enjoy seasonal extreme sports. Additionally, cultural facilities like the 'Morino Hakubutsukan Tamabara' (Tamabara Forest Museum) allow you to learn more about the local nature and culture. The entire Numata area serves as an outdoor hub, with many nearby facilities available for camping and BBQ.
As you will be walking in a natural environment, comfortable and functional clothing is highly recommended. Since weather and temperatures can change rapidly near the wetlands, bringing a light jacket is wise. Wear sturdy sneakers or trekking shoes. Regarding payments, the Center House and surrounding facilities generally accept both cash and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, etc.). Please respect the environment: do not pick plants or leave any trash behind. As English signage is limited, it is helpful to check maps or information in advance.
