Takise Coast is one of Hokkaido's most stunning scenic spots, affectionately known by the local name "Shirafura." The name "Shirafura" literally translates to "white slope," referring to the most striking feature of the area: a continuous white cliff approximately 20 meters high and 500 meters long. This white wall-like landscape was formed by the accumulation of pumice from volcanic eruptions roughly 5 million years ago, which was later uplifted by geological forces. Because of this unique appearance, many visitors feel as though they have been transported to a foreign coastline, making it a highly popular destination for photography and relaxation.
The landscape here is a masterpiece of nature that took millions of years to create. The layers of pumice brought by volcanic activity settled over an immense period of time to form these dynamic cliffs. Beyond its natural beauty, the site has a touch of cultural fame; the dramatic white cliffs have even served as a backdrop for musical performances by the famous Japanese rock band "GLAY," highlighting the site's status as a grand, natural stage.
The greatest highlight is the sharp contrast between the brilliant white cliffs and the deep blue sea. At the foot of the cliffs, you can find unique rock formations such as the "Kuguri-iwa" (Tunnel Rock), allowing you to experience the power of natural sculpting up close. Additionally, the "Takise Coast Shirafura Observation Park" is well-maintained, offering a perfect vantage point. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the coastline and the paths leading down to the water, providing multiple perspectives of this natural wonder.
Takise Coast reveals different faces depending on the season. The summer months (May to September) are particularly recommended, as the contrast between the blue sky and the white cliffs is at its most vivid and refreshing. The rest area at the observation park is operational from April 1st to November 30th, making spring through autumn the ideal time to visit. The appearance of the cliffs changes with the weather; on clear, sunny days, the white rock faces stand out brilliantly against the ocean.
Visitors can experience the beauty of nature through all five senses. You can gaze down at the ocean from the observation deck or stroll along the well-maintained paths to soak in the coastal atmosphere. The scenery is so striking that it is a favorite for professional photographers. It is a place to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, offering a luxurious sense of tranquility as you listen to the sound of the waves and admire a work of art created by nature.
The area around Otobe Town, where Takise Coast is located, features beautiful coastlines perfect for a scenic drive. The surrounding region is dotted with local specialty shops and nature-rich parks. While exploring the coast, you can enjoy the gentle pace of life in Hokkaido by visiting local roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki) and tasting regional delicacies.
At the vending machines located within the observation park's rest area, you can purchase local specialties of Otobe. Please note that these machines primarily require cash.
English language support and signage in the surrounding facilities are currently limited. While basic information may be available on signs, it is helpful to have a translation app ready for more detailed inquiries.
No prior reservation is required to visit Takise Coast or the Observation Park. You are free to visit at your convenience.
As this is a natural environment, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes. When moving from the observation deck toward the coast, please be careful as there are stairs and slopes. It is also wise to bring a light jacket to prepare for sudden changes in coastal weather.
