Tagi Beach, also known as Kirara Beach, is a breathtaking coastal destination located adjacent to 'Michi-no-Eki Kirara Taki' in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. As you descend the stairs from the roadside station toward the shore, a stunning expanse of cobalt blue sea unfolds before your eyes. The beach is highly regarded for both its natural beauty and its excellent facilities. A standout feature is the sunset; the view of the sun sinking into the Sea of Japan is truly spectacular and has been officially selected as one of 'Japan's Top 100 Sunsets.' The topography features shallow waters, making it a safe and ideal environment for families and children to enjoy summer leisure activities.
This area has long been blessed with the rich natural environment of the Sea of Japan. With the development of the 'Kirara Taki' area, it has evolved from a simple natural coastline into a comprehensive resort area that integrates nature, tourism, leisure, food, and hot springs. Centered around the local 'Michi-no-Eki' (roadside station), a culture has been formed where visitors can simultaneously enjoy the natural scenery, the magnificent sunsets, and the delicious local cuisine of the Shimane region.
The greatest highlight is undoubtedly the scenery at dusk. The moment the sky and sea are dyed in deep crimson and gold is a sight that can only be described as magnificent. For safety, lifesavers are stationed at the beach, ensuring a secure environment for swimmers. Furthermore, the area offers facilities to enrich your stay, such as 'Sanjiki-seki' (shaded seating areas) for a relaxing experience and 'Umi-no-ie' (beach huts) where you can enjoy light snacks. The striking contrast between the cobalt blue sea and the bright sky also makes this an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts.
The main season for swimming is from mid-July through the end of the Obon holiday in August. During this period, the contrast between the bright blue sky and the deep blue sea is exceptionally beautiful, perfect for active water sports. However, the most highly recommended time to visit is in the evening. By arriving in time for the sunset, you can witness the dramatic transformation of the sky into shades of orange and crimson. If you prefer a calmer experience, visiting in the early morning offers a more tranquil sea and fewer crowds.
The 'Umi-no-ie' (beach huts), which operate during the summer season, serve delicious light meals such as yakisoba and shaved ice. Beach umbrellas are also available for rent, allowing you to relax while staying protected from the sun. For those seeking more comfort, the 'Sanjiki-seki' (shaded seating) provides a private space where 5 to 6 adults can sit comfortably in one section. Beyond swimming, you can combine your visit with other outdoor activities such as visiting nearby hot springs, camping, or enjoying a barbecue, making it a versatile destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Located directly above the beach is 'Michi-no-Eki Kirara Taki,' which provides a variety of facilities including restaurants serving local ingredients, shops, and rest areas. Additionally, the nearby 'Ichijiku Onsen' allows you to refresh yourself in warm natural hot springs after a day at the beach. The area also features cottages and auto-camping sites, making it a highly convenient base for a full-scale outdoor adventure or an extended stay.
Basic essentials for enjoying the beach include swimwear, sandals, a change of clothes, and sunscreen. For your convenience, warm showers (available for a fee) are installed on-site. While there is a free parking lot for approximately 230 vehicles on the east side of the roadside station, please expect heavy crowds during the summer. It is also recommended to locate the life-saving equipment/buoys on the beach for safety. Please ensure you carry cash for using local facilities and services, such as the showers or rentals.
