Takehana Betsuin is a historic Buddhist temple located in Hashima City, Gifu Prefecture. Its most significant feature is the magnificent wisteria (Fuji) trees, which are designated as a prefectural natural monument and are estimated to be over 300 years old. During the early summer season, the sight of countless layers of light purple blossoms cascading from the wisteria trellis creates a truly breathtaking landscape, perfectly complemented by the solemn beauty of the traditional temple architecture. The expansive grounds offer a harmonious blend of natural splendor and the dignified atmosphere of a classic Japanese temple.
The history of this temple dates back to 1604 (Keicho 9). It began when the monk Kyonyo established the temple as a 'Gobo' to spread Buddhist teachings, eventually moving the site from Kano Village to Takega Hana Village. After surviving various challenges, including fires, the temple was relocated to its current location in 1760 (Horeki 10). The name 'Takehana Betsuin' was officially adopted in 1876 (Meiji 9). The grounds also hold significant historical value, housing the grave of Takenaka Denroku, a retainer of the Tokugawa Shogunate, serving as a testament to the region's deep historical roots.
The absolute must-see attraction is the 'Wisteria of Takehana Betsuin.' The grand scale of the wisteria trellis, with a circumference of 2.8m and a spread of 33m east to west, offers a powerful display of nature's vitality. Additionally, the traditional temple buildings, characterized by heavy tiled roofs, provide a profound sense of Japanese spiritual culture. Depending on the season, you may also experience tea ceremonies held under the wisteria, allowing you to feel the changing seasons within this sacred, historical space.
The most recommended time to visit Takehana Betsuin is from April to May, when the wisteria is in full bloom. During this period, the light purple blossoms reach their peak, offering a stunning display of color. The bright daylight hours are ideal for photography, as the contrast between the vibrant wisteria and the blue sky is exceptionally beautiful. Visiting during seasonal events also allows you to enjoy a more lively and festive atmosphere.
When the wisteria is in full bloom, special activities such as matcha tea service under the flowers may be held.
