Takatsuto Gorge is a breathtaking scenic area located in the middle reaches of the Watarase River in Midori City, Gunma Prefecture. Often referred to as the 'Yabakei of Kanto,' the area is characterized by its unique and striking geological formations. The highlight of the experience is the view from the 'Hanetaki Bridge,' a pedestrian-only bridge. The name 'Hanetaki' is derived from the way the water appears to splash and leap like a waterfall. From this 120-meter-long, 3.5-meter-wide bridge, visitors can enjoy a high-angle perspective of the dramatic valley and the natural sculpting of the landscape below.
The area surrounding Takatsuto Gorge has long been recognized for its preserved natural beauty. The current shape of the gorge was carved over time by the flowing waters of the Watarase River, creating a landscape that is both rugged and beautiful. This region is cherished as a symbolic scenic spot for the area, where the harmony between the river and the surrounding terrain provides a sense of tranquility and natural wonder that has been maintained for generations.
The primary attraction of Takatsuto Gorge is the panoramic view from the Hanetaki Bridge. Standing on the bridge allows you to see the entire scale of the gorge from an elevated position. Additionally, on the left bank, there is a scenic walking path known as the 'Takatsuto Gorge Promenade' that leads toward the Takatsuto Bridge (approximately 500m). Along this path, you can discover the famous 'Gorilla Rock,' a unique rock formation shaped by natural erosion. Walking through the promenade allows you to experience the texture of the rocks and the flow of the river at a much closer distance.
Takatsuto Gorge offers a completely different atmosphere depending on the season. The most popular times to visit are from April to November, specifically during the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn foliage. From spring to summer, the vibrant contrast between the flowing river and the lush green forest is striking. In autumn, the surrounding trees turn brilliant shades of red and gold, transforming the entire valley into a colorful masterpiece. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours to clearly see the clarity of the water and the intricate shapes of the rocks. While the area is open 24 hours, daytime visits are highly recommended for safety and visibility.
Activities here center around nature walks and sightseeing. You can enjoy a stroll along the 500m promenade from the Hanetaki Bridge to the Takatsuto Bridge, observing the river and rock formations beneath your feet. Please note that the path includes some stairs and changes in elevation. There is also a resting area with a gazebo (azumaya) along the path for breaks. A typical round trip takes about 30 minutes (approx. 900m). The main goal for most visitors is the peaceful observation of nature, such as the unique Gorilla Rock.
The gorge is easily accessible via Omama Station, which is only about an 8-minute walk away. This makes it a convenient destination for those using public transportation. Nearby, you can also find other walking routes such as the Jogaiyama Trail, making the area a hub for nature lovers and hikers looking to explore the diverse landscapes of Gunmed.
