Takane Castle (Konomine-jo) is a mountain castle ruin located on Konomine, a peak with an altitude of 338m in Kamiuno, Yamaguchi City. As a designated National Historic Site and one of the '100 Famous Japanese Castles,' it served as a vital stronghold for the Ouchi clan. The site preserves significant remains, including stone walls, foundation stones, and roof tiles around the main enclosure (Honmaru), offering a glimpse into the defensive structures of the Sengoki period.
The history of Takane Castle is deeply intertwined with the movements of the Ouchi clan, a powerful family during the Sengoku period. Construction began in 1556 (Koji 2) under Ouchi Yoshiharu. It was designed as a typical mountain castle to defend against the forces of Yoshimi Masayori of Izumi Province and Mori Motonari of Aki Province. However, due to the rapid advancement of the Mori clan, the Ouchi clan abandoned the site before its completion.
Following the fall of the Ouchi, the Mori clan resumed construction, utilizing the site as a base for their rule in Yamaguchi. The Ichikawa clan, a branch of the Kikukawa, served as castle lords to strengthen its defenses. Eventually, following the outcome of the Battle of Sekigahara, the Mori clan was forced to relocate their base, and the castle was decommissioned in 1638 due to the 'One Castle per Province' edict.

The most striking feature is the ruins of the Honmaru (main enclosure) near the summit at 338m. The layout of the fortifications (kuruwa) follows the natural ridges of the mountain, showcasing the classic design of a Japanese mountain castle. Visitors can observe stone walls, foundation stones of buildings, and excavated roof tiles, which serve as physical evidence of the sophisticated architectural techniques of that era. The strategic use of the natural terrain for defense is clearly visible from the main enclosure.
As a historical site, there are no official gates or opening hours. However, because access requires hiking through mountain paths, it is highly recommended to visit during daylight hours. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons; the lush greenery of spring and the vibrant colors of autumn offer a stunning backdrop to the historical ruins and the surrounding forest environment.

Visitors can experience the physical structure of a historical mountain castle by hiking the mountain trails. Routes are available via the path from Yamaguchi Daijingu or the route from Kido Shrine.
