Takamori-dono no Sugi is a massive, historic cedar tree located in Takomori Town, Kumamoto Prefecture. This site is deeply connected to the history of the Takomori clan, specifically the lord Takomori Iyo-no-kami Koreori, who ruled the area during the Sengoku (Warring States) period. The surrounding quiet atmosphere and the sight of the cedar stretching straight toward the heavens provide a sense of overwhelming presence and spiritual tranquility to all who visit.
The name 'Takamori-dono' refers to the lord of the Takomori clan, Takomori Iyo-no-kami Koreori. According to historical records, in the year 1586 (Tensho 14), following a fierce battle with the Shimazu clan of Satsuma, the lord committed ritual suicide under this very tree alongside his retainer, Mimori Hyogo Naokoto. This tragic event gave the tree its legendary name. The tree's age is estimated to be between 400 and 1,000 years, suggesting it was already a massive specimen during that era. While the site once served as the burial ground for the Takomori lords, the remains were later moved. Today, a memorial tower for Mimori Hyogo is enshrined beneath the tree.
