Takamatsuzuka Kofun is a terminal-period tumulus (ancient burial mound) located in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, dating back to the late 7th or early 8th century. The structure is a two-tiered circular mound with a diameter of 23m (lower tier) and 18m (upper tier), and a height of 5m. The site gained national fame in 1972 following the discovery of its stunningly preserved colored murals. Today, the adjacent Takamatsuzuka Mural Hall showcases high-quality reproductions of these murals, structural models, and cross-section specimens of the tomb to provide a deep understanding of the site.
While originally thought to be from the late 7th century, recent excavations in 2005 confirmed that the tomb was constructed during the Fujiwara-kyo period (694–710 AD). The interior of the stone chamber contains iconic murals, such as the famous group of female figures, which are frequently featured in Japanese history textbooks. Although the identity of the deceased remains unknown, the site is a vital archaeological treasure that showcases the sophisticated culture and artistic prowess of ancient Japan.
Because the actual stone chamber cannot be opened to the public to preserve its delicate state, the Takamatsuzuka Mural Hall offers highly detailed reconstructions. Key exhibits include life-sized reproductions of the murals as they appeared when discovered, as well as the 'Kofun Hanchoso' (actual cross-section specimens of the mound's layers). These exhibits allow visitors to observe the architectural techniques and the specific artistic styles of the era in great detail.
The opening hours of the Takamatsuzuka Mural Hall vary depending on the season. Generally, it is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. However, please note that during the winter season (December to February), the closing time is 4:30 PM. Last entry is permitted 30 minutes before closing. The surrounding area offers a beautiful landscape that changes with the seasons, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the ancient ruins.
To enhance your visit, the facility offers a rental service for an audio guide pen (additional fee) to provide detailed explanations of the exhibits. There is also a library corner featuring books related to the Asuka period for those wishing to study the history further. Occasionally, special events such as stamp rallies are held, adding an extra layer of fun to exploring the different sections of the site.
Just north of Takamatsuzuka Kofun lies the Nakao-yama Kofun, a unique octagonal three-tiered mound. The area is part of the National Asuka Historical Park, which is dotted with other significant sites like the Kitora Kofun and Ishibutai Kofun. This makes it easy to plan a historical walking route. Parking is also available in the vicinity, making it accessible for those traveling by car.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes as you will be exploring the historical site. The facility is equipped with a multi-purpose room (including a nursing room). Wheelchairs are available for free loan at the reception desk upon request. To protect the precious artifacts and the historical environment, please follow all local etiquette and signage during your visit.
