Takamatsu Castle Ruins (Tamamo Park) is a historic site located in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture. It is uniquely characterized as a 'sea castle' due to its position facing the Seto Inland Sea. As one of Japan's three great water castles, its most striking feature is the vast, expansive moats that create a stunning and serene landscape. The site is well-maintained, featuring historical castle remnants, elegant structures, and beautiful gardens that serve as a symbol of Takamatsu's rich history.
The history of this site traces back to the ancient fortifications of the region, eventually becoming the stronghold of the Takamatsu Domain. Due to its strategic location along the Seto Inland Sea, the castle functioned as a 'sea castle' to defend against maritime threats. Today, several structures remain, including the Kitanomaru Tsukimi Yagura (Moon Viewing Turret), Kitanomaru Midote Gate, and Kitanomaru Watari Yagura, all designated as Important Cultural Properties. Additionally, the Hiyun-kaku villa, the former residence of the Matsudaira family, is also a designated Important Cultural Property, adding immense historical value to the area.
The park is home to numerous structures of high historical value. The most notable are the turrets like the Kitanomaru Tsukimi Yagura and the Kitanomaru Gate, which offer a rare glimpse into traditional Japanese architectural styles. Another highlight is the Hiyun-kaku Garden, a designated scenic spot where historical architecture harmonizes perfectly with the surrounding nature. The structural design of the castle, surrounded by water-filled moats, serves as a powerful testament to its original defensive functions.
The landscape undergoes beautiful transformations throughout the seasons. In spring and summer, the greenery surrounding the moats becomes particularly lush, offering a refreshing view. Please note that opening hours vary depending on the season and month. For instance, the West Gate may open as early as 05:30 during certain months, allowing visitors to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the early morning. Note that the park is closed from December 29th to 31st during the New Year holidays.

For a modern twist, the official website offers a 'Hiyun-kaku VR Tour,' which uses digital technology to allow you to explore the interior of the buildings. This is especially useful for viewing areas that may currently have restricted access.
