The Niu Art Museum is a unique complex located in Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture, where art and natural history seamlessly blend. The museum was established to honor the memory of Kojiro Kojima, a Western-style painter from Okayama who played a vital role in supporting the collection of the Ohara Museum of Art. The current building, completed in 1994, was designed by the world-renowned architect Tadao Ando. Built upon the stone walls of the Niu Jinya ruins—a designated historical site of Takahashi City—the architecture itself serves as a profound work of art.
The museum's roots date back to 1953, when it first opened as the "Niu Town Museum." Through various name changes and structural evolutions, it now serves as the Niu Art Museum, preserving the cultural heritage of the region. The collection is particularly significant due to the precious items gathered by Kojiro Kojima during his travels abroad, as well as the ancient plant fossils discovered in this very area. The design by Tadao Ando emphasizes the harmony between the built environment and the natural landscape, creating a space that feels integrated with its surroundings.
The museum features three primary exhibition areas. The first is the "Kojiro Kojima Painting Room," which displays his representative oil paintings, sketches, and even original furniture he crafted. The second is the "Orient Room," which showcases precious cultural heritage from the Orient and Europe, centered around ancient Egyptian artifacts collected by Kojiro Kojima. The third is the "Fossil Room," which houses hundreds of specimens, including the oldest plant fossils in Japan from the Niu Group, some of which include globally significant new species.
Around the museum, you can enjoy the "Flowing Water Garden" and the "Still Water Garden," which utilize local groundwater. Because the appearance of the water and surrounding plants changes with the seasons, the scenery offers a dynamic experience of nature and architecture.
