Takabotchi Kogen is a high-altitude plateau situated at 1,600 meters within the Yatsugatake Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park in Shiojiri City, Nagano Prefecture. Because there are no tall buildings in the vicinity, the area offers a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view. The dynamic landscapes that change with the seasons and time of day attract photographers and travelers from all over. In recent years, its breathtaking natural environment has also made it a popular filming location for Japanese anime and television dramas, bringing national attention to its beauty.
The region has long been cherished for its rich natural environment. Historically, the area hosted traditional events such as the "Takabotchi Kogen Sightseeing Grass Horse Racing Tournament" (though this event has since concluded). As part of a Quasi-National Park, the area is strictly managed under conservation rules to preserve its pristine landscape and ensure that the natural environment remains protected for future generations.
The greatest draw of Takabotchi Kogen is the natural phenomena created by its altitude. The "Unkai" (sea of clouds) that appears during seasonal transitions creates a truly mystical and ethereal atmosphere. Furthermore, due to the high elevation and lack of light pollution, the night sky reveals a breathtaking canopy of stars. Visitors can also enjoy the sight of alpine flowers like the Rengetsu Tsutsuji (Azalea) blooming in season, alongside grazing cattle, which adds a peaceful, pastoral charm to the scenery.
The purpose of your visit will change depending on the season. In mid-June, the beautiful Rengetsu Tsutsuji flowers reach their peak. From June to October, you can observe cattle grazing in the fields. From late October to December, the area is particularly prone to producing the spectacular sea of clouds. For stargazing, the night offers a profound sense of silence and the vastness of the universe. Please note that the area is closed from early December to mid-April due to winter conditions.
To fully immerse yourself in the plateau, consider staying in the camping area. There are auto-sites and free sites available, allowing you to spend a night surrounded by untouched nature. The area near the management building (Deidarabotchi-kan) provides a comfortable base for your stay. Please be aware that advance reservations are mandatory for using the camping and tent/tarp areas.
As part of the Yatsugatake Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park, Takabotchi Kogen is surrounded by numerous natural attractions. The nearby driving routes are highly recommended for those who wish to enjoy the changing seasonal scenery while traveling through the mountains.
Since the plateau sits at 1,600m, temperatures are significantly lower than in the lowlands. Even in summer, please bring warm clothing or a light jacket. If you plan on camping or hiking, ensure you have appropriate gear. To protect the environment, please follow all rules: take your trash home with you and strictly observe fire safety (open flames are prohibited; always use a fire stand/brazier if permitted).
