Tashimagahara (Sakuso Park) is a vast 4.1-hectare grassland located on the Arakawa riverbed in Sakura Ward, Saitama City. The greatest draw of this site is its status as the natural habitat of the Primula sieboldii (Sakuraso), which is designated as a National Special Natural Monument. Because the ecosystem is strictly preserved, visitors can enjoy a truly precious landscape where delicate pink Primula flowers are scattered across the greenery during the spring season.
This area is far more than just a public park; it is a highly significant site for biodiversity. Along with the Primula sieboldii, approximately 250 species of wild plants, such as the species of wild shrubs, grow here. Through decades of dedicated natural conservation efforts, this unique ecosystem has been preserved. The area holds immense cultural value as a place that respects the natural cycle by keeping human intervention and artificial development to an absolute minimum.
The primary highlight is the blooming of the Primula sieboldi from late March to late April. Rather than a dense, uniform carpet, the flowers appear scattered naturally across the meadow, a sight that is considered highly rare and beautiful. The vast grassland offers a harmonious landscape that blends perfectly with its surroundings, allowing visitors to observe the changing faces of various wild plants throughout the seasons.
The best time to visit is from late March to late April when the Primula flowers are in full bloom. Notably, the "Sakuraso Matsuri" (Primula Festival) is held every year in mid-April. The observation paths are accessible from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to see the vibrant pink hues of the flowers clearly under the spring sun.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the natural ecosystem via well-maintained observation paths. However, because this is a protected National Special Natural Monument, stepping off the designated paths is strictly prohibited to protect the fragile environment. It is a perfect spot for a quiet, meditative walk to feel the vitality of nature.
Tashimagahara is situated on the Arakawa riverbed, surrounded by vast green spaces like Akigase Park. It is easily accessible from the Urawa area of Saitama City, making it a great destination for those looking to enjoy a nature walk near the city.
Strict adherence to conservation rules is required. Collecting any plants or living creatures is strictly forbidden. Do not enter or climb on the fences. If you are using a camera tripod, it must be used outside the fenced areas. Please note that there are no shops within the park, so please bring your own beverages. There are two vending machines available on-site for your convenience.
