Taiyo no Oka Engaru Park is located in Engaru Town, Monbetsu District, Hokkaido. The park is characterized by the seasonal transformation of its hills, which are adorned with different flowers throughout the year. Most notably, from summer to autumn, the park becomes one of Japan's largest cosmos gardens, featuring approximately 10 million blooms including mixed cosmos and yellow cosmos varieties. In spring and early summer, the landscape changes again with the blooming of Ezo Yamazakura (mountain cherry blossoms), moss phlox (shibazakura), and azaleas, offering a diverse seasonal spectacle.
The park is maintained through the dedicated cooperation of the local community. From planting flowers and weeding to maintaining flower beds and providing guide staff, the local citizens work together to manage the area. This community-driven effort ensures that the beautiful landscapes are preserved and shared with visitors.
The park features several distinct areas. The primary highlight is the "Niji no Hiroba" (Rainbow Plaza) Cosmos Garden, where you can wander through a vast expanse of cosmos flowers. Another impressive spot is the "Kanbo Rock," situated at an altitude of approximately 160.8m, which offers a panoramic view of the Engaru town area. Additionally, the "Miharashi Ranch," a municipal ranch, provides a pastoral landscape with grazing cattle, and on clear days, you can even see far out to the Okhotsk Sea. Depending on your visit, you may also enjoy tulips, azaleas, or moss phlox.
The best time to visit depends on the scenery you wish to see. For spring and early summer (mid-May to early June), focus on moss phlox, azaleas, and tulips. For the main attraction, visit from summer to early autumn (July to early November) to see the 10 million cosmos flowers in full bloom. The park is generally open from late April to late October (or early November) from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Please note that the park is not open at night, so it is best to visit during daylight hours.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls surrounded by seasonal flowers. In the Niji no Hiroba area, you can walk through the expansive cosmos fields. For relaxation, the "Sun Hill House" is available; this building is constructed with local Engaru larch wood and serves as a perfect spot to rest. A small shop also sells snacks and soft-serve ice cream, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful moment while taking in the natural scenery.
Near the summit of the park lies the municipal "Miharashi Ranch," where you can observe cattle living in a natural environment. The area is well-connected to the Engaru town center, making it an easy addition to a Hokkaido sightseeing itinerary.
It is highly recommended to carry cash for purchases at the souvenir shops or snack stands. Please check local signage for details.
English language support and signage may be limited within the park. It is helpful to have a translation app ready for smoother communication.
No advance reservation is required to enter the park. However, it is always wise to check for any special events or facility updates beforehand.
As the park covers a large area, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Depending on the season, please bring items to protect against sun exposure or temperature changes, such as a hat and water.
Photography of the scenery is freely permitted. We kindly ask that you follow park etiquette and do not disturb the plants while taking photos.
While there are walking paths throughout the park, please be aware that there may be uneven terrain or steps depending on the season and weather conditions.
This park is a precious space maintained by the local community. Please be mindful to take your trash home with you and avoid stepping on or damaging the flowers.
