Taiyo Koen is a unique theme park located at the foot of Mt. Mine in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture. The park is divided into two main areas: the "Stone Area," where massive stone structures are clustered, and the "Castle Area," located at the mountain summit. The Stone Area features breathtaking replicas of world-famous landmarks such as the Great Wall of China, the Egyptian Pyramids, and the Terracotta Army, creating a grand and surreal landscape. To reach the White Swan Castle at the summit, visitors can enjoy a scenic ride on a dedicated monorail.
The park's journey began on October 1, 1992, with the opening of the "Stone Area." The "Castle Area" was added later on April 19, 2009, completing the current layout. A unique aspect of Taiyo Koen is its social mission: it is operated by the Aiko Social Welfare Association. The facility serves as a place of employment for people with disabilities, and the revenue from admission fees and other services is used to support social welfare programs and salaries for these employees. This creates a meaningful blend of leisure and social contribution. In the past, the park has also hosted traditional events like fire festivals in August.
The park is filled with diverse, near-life-sized replicas of world heritage sites. In the Stone Area, you can witness the 2-kilometer-long Great Wall, the Terracotta Army Hall featuring 1,000 statues, the Pyramids and Sphinx of Egypt, ruins of Machu Picchu, the Arc de Triomphe, and Tiananmen Square. You will also encounter stone statues such as the Moai from Easter Island and the Merlion. The highlight of the Castle Area is the "White Swan Castle," which boasts an exterior reminiscent of the famous Neuschwanstein Castle in southern Germany. A monorail (slope car) provides a convenient and fun way to ascend the mountain to the castle.
Taiyo Koen is open year-round, making it a great destination regardless of the season. During the day, it is perfect for strolling through the vast grounds, riding the monorail, and admiring the massive stone structures. The park also hosts various special events, such as supercar and classic car shows, cosplay gatherings, and live music performances. Visiting during these event periods offers a much more dynamic and varied experience than standard sightseeing.
Beyond sightseeing, the park offers cultural experiences, such as the "Takumi no Machi Rainbow," where visitors can observe traditional craft demonstrations. For relaxation, the "Welcome House Swan" at the foot of the mountain serves as a hub with a restaurant and souvenir shop. Riding the monorail to the White Swan Castle is one of the most popular activities. Additionally, the park frequently hosts themed events related to automobiles and music, adding excitement to your visit.
Located at the foot of the mountains in Himeji, the park is near several historical sites, including the iconic Himeji Castle. For access, visitors typically take a bus from JR Himeji Station. It is also worth checking if a free shuttle bus is operating from Yabu Station on the Kinokamo Line, as this service can vary.
Because the grounds are vast and include slopes and mountainous terrain, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While the monorail is available to reach the White Swan Castle, walking is also an option. Please check the availability of cash, credit cards, and IC cards at the various facilities on-site. While English signage and staff support vary by season and event, please follow local instructions regarding photography and general etiquette. As the facility is deeply connected to social welfare, please maintain respectful behavior throughout your visit.
