Cape Tachimachi is a scenic cape located southeast of Hakodate City, Hokkaido, facing the Tsugaru Strait. The landscape is characterized by dramatic cliffs rising approximately 30 meters above sea level. On clear days, visitors are treated to a vast, unobstructed view of the Tsugaru Strait. The area features the well-maintained 'Hanamasu Park,' where the Hamanasu (Rosa rugosa), a representative flower of Hokkaido, blooms beautifully. It is a unique spot where natural geological formations and historical depth coexist.
This location has held significant historical roles. During the Kan'ei era, it functioned as a 'Daiba' (fortification) to monitor foreign ships for northern defense. In the Meiji era, it served as a defensive position for the Hakodate Fortification system. The name 'Tachimachi' (meaning 'standing and waiting') is thought to be a Japanese translation of the Ainu word 'Pius,' which refers to a place where one waits on a rock to catch fish with a spear. Furthermore, the local rocks, such as basalt and amphibole, were historically used in the construction of the stone walls of the Goryokaku Fort.
The primary attraction is the breathtaking view of the Tsugaru Strait from the cliff edge. In the summer, Hanamasu Park comes alive with vibrant pink flowers. Additionally, the site holds literary significance with the presence of monuments dedicated to the famous poets Kan and Akiko Yosano. These monuments, linked to Kenzo Okada (the founder of the Hakodate City Museum), allow visitors to connect with the local cultural and literary heritage through the verses of the Yosano family.
From spring to summer, the blooming of the Hamanasu roses provides a beautiful pink hue and a lovely fragrance. Please note that during the winter season, vehicle access is restricted to prevent accidents due to frozen roads; access is limited to pedestrians only. For the best experience, visit on a clear day to witness the striking contrast between the deep blue of the Tsugaru Strait and the rugged cliffs.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll around the cape, observing the natural geological formations and historical remnants. During the summer, you can experience the local atmosphere at the nearby 'Hanamasu' shop. Walking along the cliffside provides an intimate encounter with the raw power of nature and the sea.
The cape is located southeast of Mount Hakodate and forms part of the coastline leading toward the Hakodate city center and the Yunokawa Onsen hot spring area. It is easily accessible from the Omoribama area, making it a perfect addition to a standard Hakodate sightseeing itinerary.
As the cape can be quite windy, we recommend wearing windproof clothing. In winter, the roads can be icy, so please wear shoes with good grip. While nearby shops may accept cash or credit cards, please note they operate on a seasonal basis (summer only). While some English signage is available, detailed support is limited, so please check local information. No reservations are required for visiting.
