Tachigami Gorge is a natural park located in Hikawa Town, Yatsushiro District, Kumamoto Prefecture. The area is characterized by massive limestone cliffs, standing 75 meters high and 250 meters wide, formed by the erosion of Paleozoic limestone. This scenic area is often called the 'Sky Waterfall of Higo,' offering a close-up view of nature's magnificent architectural beauty. Well-maintained walking paths allow for easy nature strolls and environmental learning. It is also a popular destination for campers who wish to spend quality time immersed in the natural environment.
The region has been developed as a scenic spot that exists in harmony with the natural environment. The nearby Toyo Town is the birthplace of the 'Tane-yama Stonemasons,' famous for constructing many 'Megane Bridge' (spectacle bridge) structures across Japan since the late Edo period. This area carries a rich cultural background related to the craftsmanship and history of stonemasonry. The development of the natural park focuses on preserving the local environment while utilizing it for tourism and educational purposes.
The greatest attraction is the stunning contrast between the white limestone cliffs and the surrounding vegetation. During the autumn foliage season, the colors of the trees stand out brilliantly against the white cliff faces. A suspension bridge also spans part of the landscape, providing a unique vantage point to enjoy the gorge. At night, the cliffs and the suspension bridge are often illuminated, offering a mystical and different experience from the daytime scenery. These illuminations are available throughout the year.
The most recommended time to visit is from mid-November to early December, when the autumn colors reach their peak. During this period, the vibrant colors of the trees create a beautiful contrast with the white limestone walls. Visiting at night is also a great option to experience the illuminated scenery. While the illumination is available year-round, please be cautious of your footing when walking at night.
Within the natural park, you can enjoy walking along the scenic trails. The area also features a campsite, making it possible to stay overnight surrounded by nature. It is a perfect place to spend time away from daily life while gazing at the river flow and the majestic cliffs. The site is also utilized for environmental education and training programs.
Nearby, you can visit the 'Toyo Sekishokan' (Toyo Stonemason Museum) to experience the historical stone-working techniques. Additionally, the 'Michi-no-Eki Toyo Koryu Center Seseragi' is located close by, where you can purchase local specialties and fresh vegetables. You can easily plan a route that combines nature walks with local culture and food.
If you plan to hike or camp, please prepare comfortable walking shoes. Clothing suitable for changing weather is recommended for activities within the natural park. The reception hours are from 8:30 to 17:30, and the facility is closed on Tuesdays. It is highly recommended to confirm details regarding facility usage via phone in advance.
