The Susami Municipal Shrimp and Crab Aquarium, located in Susami Town, Minamimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture, is a highly specialized facility dedicated to the study and display of shrimp and crabs. The structure is truly unique, as it utilizes the repurposed gymnasium of the former Esumi Junior High School. The aquarium features approximately 1,000 specimens across 150 different species of crustaceans, focusing heavily on those found in the waters around the Kii Peninsula as well as rare species from around the world. Unlike traditional general aquariums, this facility offers a deep dive into the specific world of crustaceans.
The origins of this facility date back to 1997, starting as a collection of marine life tanks established with the cooperation of local fishermen to promote regional revitalization. After opening in 1999 in conjunction with the Nanki Kumano Experience Expo, the facility underwent changes in management and eventually moved to its current location within the 'Michi-no-Eki Susami' roadside station in 2015. By renovating a former school gymnasium, the aquarium preserves the history of the local educational infrastructure while evolving into a specialized center for crustacean enthusiasts.
The aquarium is divided into several diverse exhibition areas. At the entrance, a large Japanese spider crab greets visitors, setting a grand tone for the experience. Other notable exhibits include Australian spiny lobsters and various species of shrimp. The 'Cold Water Tank' allows visitors to observe deep-sea creatures such as the famous giant isopod, known as the world's largest woodlouse. Visual immersion is a key theme, with tanks designed to look like 'Submarine Exploration' vessels with round windows, and the 'Coconut Crab Dome,' where you can observe large crabs through a transparent dome. Beyond crustaceans, the facility also features displays related to sea turtles and seals.
The aquarium is open year-round from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Regardless of the season, the temperature-controlled tanks provide a stable environment for observing the crustaceans. Visiting during the bright daylight hours is highly recommended, as the light reflection enhances the visibility of the creatures' movements and intricate biological structures. Occasionally, special seasonal events, such as hermit crab exhibitions or coloring contests, are held to engage visitors.
Visitors can enjoy a hands-on experience at the 'Touching Pool,' where you can touch marine life such as sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and starfish. The exhibits are designed with a strong educational component, often focusing on the life cycles of hermit crabs and other seasonal themes. The facility also maintains a strong connection to the community through mobile tank displays (巡回水庫) that travel via specialized trucks.
The aquarium is conveniently located within the 'Michi-no-Eki Susami' (Roadside Station), making it easy to plan a trip that includes dining and rest. The nearby coastline of the Kii Peninsula offers beautiful scenery, making it an ideal stop for a scenic drive through southern Wakayama.
The facility is a repurposed gymnasium, so while paths are generally flat, there may be slight structural variations in certain exhibition areas. Casual, comfortable clothing suitable for the season is recommended. Payments can be made via cash or credit card. Please check with staff regarding the availability of English signage or assistance.
