Sumatakyo is a beautiful gorge formed by the Sumata River, a tributary of the Oi River, located in Kawanehon Town, central Shizuoka Prefecture. This landscape, created by the uplift of the Akaishi Mountains and intense erosion, boasts a complex and beautiful natural formation spanning 16 km. In particular, the 'Dream Suspension Bridge' spanning the Oma Dam Lake is widely known among domestic and international travelers for its mystical and breathtaking scenery. The surrounding area is designated as a Primordial Natural Conservation Area, making it a precious site where untouched, rich nature remains preserved.
Historically, this region was a center for the forestry industry. The remnants of this history can still be seen in the presence of the Hiryu Bridge and well-maintained walking paths. Today, these paths have been revitalured into scenic walking trails, allowing the area to develop as a destination where tourism and nature coexist harmoniously. Furthermore, the area gained international recognition when it was selected as one of the '10 Most Beautiful Pedestrian Suspension Bridges in the World' in a TripAdvisor feature in 2012.
The absolute highlight is undoubtedly the 'Dream Suspension Bridge.'
